After all our travel adventures, Steve and I had never gone on a hot air balloon ride. So while we were in New Zealand celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary, we went for it. We booked a flight on Sunrise Balloons in Queenstown. It was highly rated and the pictures on their website were beautiful. They told us to be prepared for colder temperatures, as the balloon took off before dawn. So we put on literally all the clothes we could manage, and we were not too warm.
Some things we learned about hot air ballooning:
A) It is a participation sport: Steve held up part of the balloon as they started big fans to begin filling it with air, and helped roll it up when we were done.
B) The propone burners they use to shoot hot air into the balloon are very loud and very hot.
C) When the burner is not on, it is very quiet because there is no wind, since we were flying with the wind. We could hear noises on the ground way below us.
D) Balloons can fly up to 6,000 feet into the air, and you can see a long way from that altitude.
E) After takeoff, the pilot really doesn’t know where they will end up landing. They are subject to the wind directions, and have to find an open field, preferable with one of the farmers they already know. I was a little alarmed when I found this out in the air, but for the most part, I was amazingly calm during our flight. I actually loved it! 🙂
F) Tradition is to drink champaign after the flight, as this is one way to appease the angry farmer when you land in his field.
G) Ballooning is a great way to appreciate the beauty and majesty of God’s creation!
Steve and I are third and fourth from the left in the back. I didn’t know what color our balloon would be, but I loved this one! I love bright & happy colors and God’s rainbow is my favorite. My wedding was a rainbow wedding 40 years ago, but it was pastel colors like my card. In Stampin’ Up colors my bridesmaids wore Crisp Cantaloupe, Lemon Lolly, Highland Heather, Balmy Blue, Mint Melody-retired, and Bubble Bath. My dress is Basic White. 🙂
My Grandma Olson made all nine pastel dresses. She was amazing! It was wonderful having my sisters, cousins, high school friends and college friends in my wedding.
This is our balloon way up in the air. The mountains and scenery were breathtaking. It was peaceful. Psalm 46- Be still and know I am God.
