Here’s my first ever rhubarb strawberry pie and also it was the first time I did a lattice crust.

It was for my son, Ryan’s, 29th birthday! He usually asks me to make him an apple pie for his birthday cake, but he’s had so many pieces of rhubarb strawberry pie on his RAGBRAI’s (bicycle ride across Iowa) that he has a new favorite! I used frozen rhubarb from my garden and frozen strawberries from the store. 🙂 I googled a new crust recipe that is half lard and half butter. It was so much easier to work with, which is why I ventured into the lattice top world. I have new confidence going into Thanksgiving pie baking, with this new recipe. Do you know anyone else who prefers birthday pie over birthday cake? I’d love to hear about it, please leave me a comment.

My nephew who lives in Tipton prefers pie on this birthday too. He has never been a fan of cake. Even at his graduation party we had mini pies and no sheet cake. Got to love the boys unique style.

I do! My mom always makes me a butterscotch pie for my birthday – ultimate favorite! The year she fell (she’s almost 92), she couldn’t make it so my youngest son googled how to make one and it was delicious too!

Your pie looks delicious! I’ve never had rhubarb and strawberry before but do like a rhubarb and apple crumble. Nice idea for the chocolate packaging – always good to show off those trees. Your tutorial gift card holder looks SO festive and appealing!
